Recreational GroupsRun and Walk with HopeThis is a group of people who come together to run or walk either a 3 K or 5 K distance, from the church, down Trulls, and into the neighbourhood. The exercise is followed by a time of fellowship and food (bananas, bagels, yogurt, water and juice). Our social time includes catching up with each other, a brief devotional discussion and a closing prayer. Once a year we volunteer as a group to stuff all the race packets for the ¼ Marathon Run for the Refuge in July. Many of us managed to run this race as well, in support of their work with homeless or at-risk youth in Oshawa. We also encourage each other to run other local races and love sharing our race stories. We run all year round, regardless of the weather. Some say we’re crazy, but we think we look good with icicles hanging from our eyebrows. Leader: Alice B. Hope PeddlersJoin us for some serious road biking on Sunday afternoons. This activity is open to males and females who choose to cycle 25k or 50k on Durham's back roads based on how they're feeling and how much time they have. Participants bike at their own pace. Enjoy the feeling of becoming fit and the exhilaration of riding with others through God's amazing countryside in our region. This past Spring we had 13 cyclists who committed to riding in the “Ride to Conquer Cancer”. We will continue to fundraise for next year’s event. Leader: Rod V. Men’s HockeyIf you are interested in playing hockey once a week, and getting to know some other men in our church, feel free to give Stan a call. The league includes both church members and non church members. Though not an organized ministry of the church, this group is an opportunity to connect with a few other Christian men while playing a sport you love. Though you are required to make a commitment in September, subs are often needed throughout the year. We look forward to signing you up for the next season. Facilitator: Stan D. Women’s SoftballIf you are interested in playing women’s softball twice a week during the summer, and getting to know some other women in our church, feel free to give Yvonne a call. The league includes both church members and non church members. Though not an organized ministry of the church, this group is an opportunity to connect with a few other Christian women while playing a sport you love. A commitment is needed during the month of May, however, we also have a need for subs during the season. We look forward to signing you up for the next season. Facilitator: Yvonne W. Skate ClubEach week, participants get together to skateboard for and hour and a half and have a brief discussion about God. These street sessions involve a mini-ramp, rails and fun boxes. At some point in the evening there is a ten minute 'God talk'. David is a level headed leader who relates well with teens because he shares their passion for boarding. Whether you skateboard or not, feel free to come and check it out! Skate Club also hosts several events through the season such as annual skateboard competitions, road trips to neighbouring skateboard parks, and barbeques. Facilitator: David G. Outstretched in Worship a Christian approach to YogaThis class is taught from a Christian perspective using Biblical readings to renew the mind as the body is being strengthened and restored. Each class begins and ends with silent prayer and scripture meditations. Classes are 60 minutes in length. Sharon teaches the basics of yoga, proper alignment in poses, breathing, and relaxation. It builds strength and flexibility throughout the body. Weight-bearing practices improve posture, balance, and focus. Students are encouraged to go at their own pace and modify postures as necessary. This class is for beginners and experienced students. Cost of the class is $5. Newcomers welcome.
